Grand Haven native coaching U.S. hockey team

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) One of the people in Sochi, Russia, for the Winter Games is Grand Haven native Dan Bylsma. He is the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL and has been tapped to coach the U.S.A. hockey team for the 2014 Olympics.

Bylsma grew up in Grand Haven, playing hockey in a rink in the back yard of his family’s home. He says he often dreamed of playing in the Olympics, but that dream was never realized. So when he was asked to be the head coach of the 2014 Olympic team, you can imagine the thrill and the magnitude of the challenge.

Dan will have two practices with his full squad before they play their first game. The U.S. opens pool play on Thursday, February 13, 2014, against Slovakia… a team that will feature Red Wings Tomas Tatar and Tomas Jurko. Game two will be the ultimate challenge. That’s when the U.S. plays Russia on its home soil.
